Managing Away at the Bay has been a labor of love and enjoyment for Glenda Gravlee, who purchased the charming property in 1987. Through the decades, Away at the Bay has been a welcome opportunity to nurture Glenda’s love of people and her love of the beautiful Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay in Fairhope, Alabama. To this day, Glenda, her husband Joe, a retired ophthalmologist, and their three children still enjoy the splendor of sunset over the Bay from their front porch - especially when they have the company of guests!
Surrender to the Spell of the South.
Away at the Bay is Fairhope's oldest Bed & Breakfast. Over years of service, we've earned a reputation for hospitality and beautiful accommodations. Our vacation rentals and short stay apartments are situated picturesquely on a towering bluff and is a property that’s enjoyed a rich history of residents. Originally, it served as an Army Barracks. Later, it was converted to the Eastern Shore Hotel. Then, it took on the identity of the Eastern Shore Apartments. Today, it is Away at the Bay – a memorable hideaway, not to be missed!
Though there have been multiple updates and remodels over the years, some things have remained the same. For example, the property’s original red oak flooring still graces our suites. Also, still in perfect tact, you’ll find the exquisite brickwork of German Master Craftsman, Peter Hening, who laid every brick with painstaking care to create a detailed and fancifully designed work (read the full story >>). Another thing that hasn’t changed, is the beauty of our location. The bluff and surrounding waters remain an ideal setting for getaways, family reunions, weddings and special occasions of all kinds.
In fact, many of our guests become so thoroughly enamored with the beauty and relaxed lifestyle of the Eastern Shore that they stay with us on one or more evenings each month. Others have uprooted their lives and relocated to Fairhope to enjoy the unique atmosphere of our area year-round.
We invite you to come experience the charm of Away at the Bay for yourself. Frogs in the fountain, owls in the oak trees, butterflies flitting about, hummingbirds dotting the garden – this is our beautiful piece of heaven and we can’t wait to share it with you!
